Hall of Fame. The Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for active senior volunteers age 60 and older who have made outstanding contributions in improving the lives of others in the community.
Each year the Hall of Fame honors up to 50 nominees as inductees. Nominees who are selected for induction will be presented at the annual awards luncheon on Oct. 23 at Michaels Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie.
To enter a candidate, a nomination form, reference letter and photograph of the nominee must be submitted. For more information or to obtain nomination forms, call 410-828-5852.

Feb. 4, 11, 25 - Caregiver programs. The Annapolis Senior Activity Center will host caregiver workshops from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 4, 11 and 25 at the center, 119 S. Villa Ave. Each workshop will focus on a different issue of caregiving. For more information, call 410-222-1818.

Feb. 4 - Ballet classes. “Ballet 40/60,” a dance program for adults age 40 and older, will begin Feb. 4 at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 801 Chase St. in Annapolis. These classes are designed to improve strength, flexibility, balance and posture while dancing to classical music. “Basics I” classes for beginners will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Monday and from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. “Basics II” classes for those with some dance experience will meet from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Monday, 8 to 9:10 p.m. Tuesday and 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. “Beyond the Basics” for experienced dancers will be offered from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 to 8:40 p.m. Thursday. Feb. 13 - Musical show. Jay Wachter, “King of the Banjo,” will perform at 1 p.m. Feb. 13 at the South County Senior Center, 27 Stepneys Lane in Edgewater. He will play love songs to enjoy for Valentine’s Day.

Arnold events

The Arnold Senior Center, located at 44 Church Road in Arnold, will host the following events in February:

  • Feb. 4 - A Mardi Gras celebration featuring the Wayward Street Players will be held at 1 p.m. Participants are invited to wear purple, yellow, and green to this free event.
  • Feb. 4 - Alberta Stornetta will present a history of Arnold at 10 a.m.
  • Feb. 6 & 20 -Free blood pressure and glucose monitorings will be provided from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and Feb. 20.
  • Feb. 11 - A presentation on the Maryland Relay System will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 11 for the hearing impaired and those seeking information about the system. Registration is requested by tomorrow.
  • Feb. 13 - Transportation from the center will be provided to seniors for an 11 a.m. lunch at Hellas Restaurant in Millersville on Feb. 13. Reservations are required by Wednesday, as space is limited.
  • Feb. 14 - The center will host a Valentine’s Sweetheart Dance from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 14. Partners are not required, and this event is free. Participants should sign up by Thursday.
  • Feb. 15 - Jill Bezek from the Department of Aging and Disabilities will present information on food supplements from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 15. The deadline for registration is Friday.
  • Feb. 18 - Seniors can play Scrabble from 12:45 to 3 p.m. Mondays. Class is canceled Feb. 18 for the Presidents Day holiday. New players are welcome.
Registration forms for spring Anne Arundel Community College classes will be available beginning at 8 a.m. tomorrow at the center.

Sept. 8-14, 2008 - Iceland trip. The Annapolis Senior Activity Center is sponsoring a trip to Iceland Sept. 8-14. Participants will visit Reykjavik; see hot springs, geysers, glacial rivers and black sand beaches; and take a walk behind a waterfall. The cost is $2,260, with a single supplement of $308. A $250 deposit is required by Nov. 30. Call 410-222-1818 for details.

Sept. 28, 2008- Italy trip. The O’Malley Senior Center is offering an 11-day trip to Italy, departing Sept. 28 and arriving home Oct. 8, 2008. This trip includes three days each in Rome, Tuscany and Venice. The total price of the trip is $4,227 per person, double occupancy and $4,788 per person, single occupancy. A $319 deposit is required, with the final payment is due by May 19, 2008. Travelers must have a current passport that will not expire before April 2009. Call 410-222-6227 for details.

Wheelchairs - The Senior Wheels USA Program makes power wheelchairs available to qualified senior citizens and those who are permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient.

Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk safely, nor self-propel a manual wheelchair, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. The program’s goal and purpose is to develop public awareness that assistance options are available to senior citizens, as well as to those who are permanently disabled, allowing them to remain independent in their own homes. Medicare resources— A medical resources package of publications from the National Pharmaceutical Council and the Federal Citizen Information Center is being offered to senior citizens. This free package can help seniors learn about the coverage gap that occurs when Medicare temporarily stops paying for prescriptions. For more information or to order a package, call 888-878-3256.

New AARP chapter — A new AARP chapter is being formed in south county for people over age 50. Originally an association of older retired people mobilized as a lobbying force on federal issues such as Social Security and Medicare, the group now also includes activities such as social, travel and educational programs. Anyone interested in assisting in the chapter formation or becoming a member can call 410-867-1128.

Senior Provider Group — The Senior Provider Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd. in Severna Park. Networking begins at 8:30 a.m. and the business meeting begins at 9 a.m. Individuals, businesses and prospective members also are invited to these meetings. Exercise class — A fitness class is being held at 11 a.m. Fridays at the Mustard Seed Cafe Senior Nutrition Site, located in the First Baptist Church of Shady Side, 1320 Avalon Blvd. in Shady Side. This “Fit and Fun” exercise class is designed for adults age 55 and older. For more information, call 410-222-4464.

Transportation — The Anne Arundel County Health Department provides transportation services for eligible Medical Assistance/Health Choice clients. Individuals with a valid Maryland Medical Assistance/Health Choice Card and no means of public or private transportation may be eligible for transportation to and from medical appointments.
