Soccer

Bowie Soccer United Storm U16 girls team competed in the Mid-Atlantic Cup held at Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown.

The girls were entered in the U19 high school girls division. In the first game, they played against the LUYAA Sonics from Urbana, and came away with a 4-0 victory. Later the Storm faced a tough team from Montgomery Soccer Independant; the Storm led, 1-0, until late in the first half when the score was tied, 1-1. In the second half the Storm could not keep up with the heat and the pace of their foes and lost, 3-1.

The following day, the Storm trailed, 2-1, with 15 minutes to play when midfielder Zulia Menjivar tied the score with a 22-yard shot over the keeper's outstretched hands. With the clock winding down, a fast-breaking Rachael Callahan found the net and propelled the Storm into the championship game.

In the championship game against the Mt. Airy Chanceleers, BSU used a controlled passing game to wear down their opponents. Catey Christian got the Storm on the board first with a 20-yard screamer and the score remained 1-0 until the end of the first half. Mariba Ferguson scored for BSU to make the score 2-0 with about 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Storm defense, comprised of Kara Johnson, Collen McEntegart, Taylor Deloach, Colleen Lynott and keeper Cynthia Hernandez, shut down any Mt. Airy attacks. The final whistle blew with the Storm celebrating a 2-0 championship victory.

The girls elected to wear their "Pink" Breast Cancer Awareness jerseys for the game to show their continuous support for a cause they have been supporting all year.
